Online Grading Systems

What have you found to be some advantages and disadvantages of online grading programs that you have used?

  1. I really like online grading systems, but I still keep a paper gradebook just in case something happens to our system. A couple teachers at my school have lost all of there grades because of the system crashing. That is the only negative I can think of. The online grade book has too many positives to name.

  2. Our corporation uses PowerSchool, which has greatly improved. I can leave individual notes for students. For example, if someone is absent, I will go ahead and enter the grade as a zero but also note the student was not present and the number of days she has to turn it in for full credit. I do not keep a paper gradebook.

  3. My school uses PowerSchool as well! It was new for us this year so we were working out a lot of kinks, but I love it! I really like how you can comment on individual assignments so the parents can see what may have went wrong. I was afraid that PowerSchool may increase the amount of parent phone calls and emails I would receive, but it actually decreased them quite a bit! I just recently learned how to look and see who checks their grades and how often and that was interesting as well! Over half of my class had never even logged on to view their grades! :( The other half logged on daily! LOL

  4. I think electronic grading has it's pros and cons. I do keep a paper grade book as a back up. My district uses Skyward. We have the ability to mark an assignment as 'no count' if a students is absent and then go back and add the grade in later. I like the idea of making comment for students and parents to see, that you mentioned. Skyward doesn't have that feature. How do you get progress reports and report cards? Our secretary prints ours. I do not like this because I would like to be able to control when they are printed to be able to fold them and put them in the envelopes to send home. There have been a few times when errors occurred and mine were not printed. I was left scurrying around at the last minute folding and stuffing envelopes. I do not like doing things at the last minute!
